Ever heard of the Sapuers? The Society for the Advancement of People of Elegance? Well i will tell you. They are stylish, fabulous and remind me of the Dandy's. I loveeee them.. I think this October a photobook is coming out called Gentlemen of Bakongo. Follow this link to read more about them.
Remember the 80's? Remember 80's movies like Ghostbusters, The Goonies, Dirty Dancing, Soulman, American Ninja (haha), Electric Boogaloo to name a view. I was feeling a bit melancholic so i desided that i am gonna watch all the movies again. Hopefully some will bring back good memories. And i reckon some will seem quit riduculous. Either way.. i will keep you posted on what the verdict is. My first choice: The Gremlins.
The sweetest thing I've ever known Was like the kiss on the collarbone The soft caress of happiness The way you walk, your style of dress I wish I didn't get so weak Ooo, baby, just to hear you speak Makes me argue just to see How much you're in love with me See, like a queen, a queen upon her throne
Chorus: It was the sweet, sweetest thing I’ve known, It was the sweet, sweetest thing I’ve known
I get mad when you walk away So I tell you leave, when I mean stay Warm as the sun dipped in black Fingertips on the small of my back More valuable than all I own Like your precious, precious, precious, precious baby, dark skin tone
It was the sweet, the sweetest thing I’ve known
It was the...Ah I try to explain Ah...but baby, it's in vain
Speaking on my mother's phone The touch that makes me think I'm grown Sweet prince of the ghetto Your kisses taste like amaretto Intoxicating, oh, so intoxicating How sad, how sad that all things come to an end But then again, I'm, I'm not alone
Chorus
Ah...Sometimes watch you in your sleep Ah... Excuse me if I get too deep, hey! Fading Chorus
-Pretend like all I want is my solitude, when a hug is what I need… -Act like you are less than you really are when you’re the only thing that matters. -Trick myself into thinking that I’m in control when I live by the clock… -Push down what is trying to escape from my heart through my mouth. -Say that I am living just for me, but I’m constantly making lists of my mistakes. -Make believe that my past plays no role in my present, when it does. -Tell myself that I can do without you, but I replay every conversation and stolen moment over and over in my head. -Hope that you won’t read my mind, but secretly wish that you will… -Push the snooze button twice, so that I can hold on to my dreams a little while longer

Who is Fofo Bristol Twenty? I think his work speaks for itself. He is a den haag native, but a world citizen. His work is strong, with powerfull messages. I hope he has an exhibition soon. I would love to see his work in real life.
I found a new jewel. A young designer from Alkmaar, Label AMAGLOW. As she puts it best herself: she designs african clothing with a European twist. And i have to say i am impressed. My favorite pieces.

The 25th celebration of the Dam to Dam Marathon last Sunday was a Masai family affair. The siblings Linet and Moses Masai, both from Kenya, came in first. Linet in the ladies run and Moses in the men's. How awesome is that. Even though it was not an official record time, the organization says that Linet put down the fastest time ever with 50 min and 39 seconds on the 19 mile race. Only thing i can say, is Big UP KENYA.
I was having a conversation with my boyfriend today about Suriname food and especially about Suriname most famous dish, POM. He wanted to know to which etnic group the recipe belonged and i remembered something about it being an original Jewish recipe. So i went and googled it. And the answer is... that is more complicated than it sounds. But i can tell you that there was a Jewish recipe called Sjalot that was originally made with potatoes, that was made similarly like pom. But there was a period in time that potatoes couldn't be imported to Suriname and they went looking for an alternative that came close to the original as possible. So they started using Taya (pomtayer). A local potatoe like vegetable already used by locals and slaves. Wanna read more, follow this link.
