Masai family rules Amsterdam Marathon

The 25th celebration of the Dam to Dam Marathon last Sunday was a Masai family affair. The siblings Linet and Moses Masai, both from Kenya, came in first. Linet in the ladies run and Moses in the men's. How awesome is that. Even though it was not an official record time, the organization says that Linet put down the fastest time ever with 50 min and 39 seconds on the 19 mile race.
Only thing i can say, is Big UP KENYA.

Pom? Creools Surinaams of Joods

I was having a conversation with my boyfriend today about Suriname food and especially about Suriname most famous dish, POM. He wanted to know to which etnic group the recipe belonged and i remembered something about it being an original Jewish recipe. So i went and googled it.
And the answer is... that is more complicated than it sounds. But i can tell you that there was a Jewish recipe called Sjalot that was originally made with potatoes, that was made similarly like pom. But there was a period in time that potatoes couldn't be imported to Suriname and they went looking for an alternative that came close to the original as possible. So they started using Taya (pomtayer). A local potatoe like vegetable already used by locals and slaves.

Dancing with nappy hair forbidden?

The Commission for equal rights in Amsterdam, decided that a student from the Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den Haag, is permitted to dance with natural hair. Apparently she was banned from classes because the rule of the school was that you can only dance if you're hair is straight and in a knot.
Because she didnt want to straighten her hair she made braids and than put it in a knot. The school found that not enough and banned her anyways. That the hairtexture had to be straight.
I am surprised that in this day in age, we still have to deal with issues like this.
Apparently having your hair like in the following picture is still not good enough in some circles.

SkIN the movie

A year ago i read this book called skin about a black girl born to white parents in Apartheid South Africa. The story is crazy.. It was made in to a movie, here is a clip of it.

It will be featured at the Africa in the Picture Festival here in Amsterdam.

I am definitely gonna be there.

NO to donations of clothing & shoes

This is crazy. I have been cleaning my house for winter and as always i donate the stuff to secondhand stores.
To my surprise i called several stores (Kringloopwinkels) to ask if they want my stuff and i was told that they DO NOT WANT my stuff because they get to much and have to throw it away anyways. Which cost them money.
What struck me most is that we are such consumers and have so much stuff that even giving it away is not an option anymore.

So what do i do now?
If anyone has an idea please let me know.
I still feel its a shame to throw it away..

Foodie Moment

Today i was to lazy to cook, so i convinced Dahlak to chek out this restaurant. Chinese. Asian Kitchen, across from the flower market near Muntplein in Amsterdam.
We tried the Beef Sheshuan and Beef with Black Bean sauce. Man, it was so good. Spicy, the beef was so soft, it was like it melted in your mouth. The service was fast and good.
And they are open till late. So try it and happy eating.
